Kishwar Memorial Trust
Kishwar Memorial Trust was established by Madhu Purnima Kishwar in 2023 to honour the memory of her parents, Smt. Shakuntla Kishwar (1928-2001) & Sh K. L. Kishwar (1916-2009).
Madhu Purnima Kishwar is a former student of Miranda House. She was Vice President and President of MH Student Union in the years 1969 and 1970 respectively. She feels honoured by the fact that her alma mater, Miranda House has agreed to collaborate with Kishwar Memorial Trust in hosting a pioneering project on a subject that has the potential to add significant new dimensions to social science research, especially Indian history and sociology.

This is how she describes the reason for setting up Kishwar Memorial Trust:
The loss of one’s parents is irreplaceable for most people. None can ever take their place in life. But most people tend to move on as they get busy with the requirements of their own life. But I have not been able to reconcile with their absence and miss them with every breathe I take, no matter how busy I am.
There is no way I can repay the debt I owe to my parents for lavishing unconditional love and support throughout my life, even when I acted against their cherished values and beliefs. They never chastised me, no matter how many blunders I committed, on account of my choosing an unconventional life full of risks and challenges. Even as a child they allowed me boundless freedom and allowed me to recognize and correct my own mistakes. To be blessed with such parents has to be on account of good karmas in my past life.
It will take me several life times to repay my debt of gratitude to them since in this life-time I failed to adequately express my gratitude in words or deeds for what they meant for me. Therefore, I decided to deal with the trauma of their loss by trying to do things that will truly honour their memory. As a start, I willed all the assets I inherited from my parents plus assets I created from my own earnings as a professor, my PPF money, royalties that may accrue from my books etc to Kishwar Memorial Trust.
Kishwar Memorial Trust is committed to do the following:
- Collaborate with Miranda House to pioneer a new way of writing Indian history through the micro histories project, “Using the Indic Lens to Deep Dive into Your Own Family, Village/Town/City History’
- Support students who wish to become Sanskrit scholars;
- Establish a Gurukul dedicated to the memory of Madhu Kishwar’s parents based on Indian Knowledge Traditions but capable of producing students who are fully equipped to meet the challenges of modern education and building socially useful careers.
